Wat Christiaans aanvult door te zeggen dat melatonine, in veel grotere mate dan voorafgaand aan de slaap, wordt aangemaakt in de cellen. ‘Ze weten nu dat een veelvoud van melatonine, overal in de cellen van je lichaam, wordt gemaakt door de mitochondriën. En dat dat die mitochondriën erg beschermt en dat de productie van die melatonine wordt opgevoerd door dit licht. Dat is waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste reden dat dit licht zo goed voor je is.’
[…] Het is melatonine die bedoeld is om de cellen te beschermen. De productie van deze melatonine wordt gestimuleerd door rood licht. Dit licht komt de moderne mens veel te weinig tegen, met alle gevolgen van dien voor zijn gezondheid.
Christiaans legt uit dat het rode licht zorgt voor de aanmaak van melatonine die vervolgens door de mitochondriën, dus de energiecentrales van de cellen, wordt gebruikt om zich te beschermen tegen antioxidanten. Die richten als gevolg daarvan minder schade aan, waardoor wij langer gezond blijven. Een ander belangrijk voordeel van de bescherming tegen de antioxidanten is dat de energiecentrales beter kunnen functioneren en in het verlengde daarvan alle lichaamscellen dus ook. Goed werkende lichaamscellen betekent meer gezondheid.
‘Dus als je iets kunt vinden waardoor die mitochondriën langer ongeschonden kunnen blijven, dan heb je een anti-agingtherapie’, legt Christiaans uit. ‘Wat deze lampen doen, [het licht ervan] dringt door tot zo’n zestig procent van al je cellen’. Het melatoninegehalte stijgt als je in het rode licht staat: ‘Dat gebeurt al heel snel’, zegt Christiaans, ‘al binnen een minuut’, wat zorgt voor ‘een hele cascade van gunstige effecten.’
Christiaans: ‘Melatonine is een erg krachtig antioxidant dat de mitochondriën beschermt en daarnaast ook lichaamseigen antioxidanten stimuleert. Zoals glutathion, catalase, superoxide dismutase – belangrijke lichaamseigen antioxidanten.’
